The Pug 411

If you are thinking about owning a pug, I'm all over that.  They are the most amazing of the canine breeds (in my opinion). However, there are some things you need to be aware of before you make that investment.

1. Skin Folds
I believe I have mentioned this in the blog, but to be sure, it's an important task to take seriously.  Any fold on a pug's face can trap some serious dirt, snot, the odd piece of cheese, or even a corn crunchy.  Be sure to buy some medicated wipes from your local veterinarian and add this to our evening regime, like brushing your teeth.  You will save time and money in the long run avoiding skin infections.

2. Snot and Hair
In a nutshell, they snot everywhere (my car was brand new until Pete came into my life). Now I can't keep up with the dried snot spray on my dashboard and front window of my house.  I still say it's worth it, but it is something you need to consider.

As for the hair, many breed of dog shed, but pug shedding is like laying down a fine layer of hair all over the house.  Be sure to avoid dark rugs, dark furniture, dark clothes or carrying around a lint brush.  Brushing your pug helps to control it, but that's life when you live with a pug...and it's still worth it.

3. Weight
Although I'm all about health at any size and would never body shame Pete, his weight has been one of the influences of his arthritis.  I did have to get it down so it wouldn't be hazardous to his joints.  A simple task, one would think, but pugs have this influence on you when you are eating.  While it appears that they haven't had food in days and are so desperate for just one small crumb, don't be fooled.  It's a trap!
